🚐 Wheelchair Transport Safety Guide

Why Lap Belts Aren’t Enough

Most vans only offer a lap belt for wheelchair users — but that’s not enough. Lap belts secure the lower body, leaving the upper body vulnerable in a crash or sudden stop. For full protection, a 3-point seatbelt (lap + shoulder) is recommended.

✅ Safety Checklist

Before Transport

  • Lock wheelchair brakes

  • Check tie-downs are secure and undamaged

  • Use a lap-sash seatbelt (not just a lap belt)

  • Remove hard trays or devices that could cause injury

During Loading

  • Park on flat, safe ground

  • Use ramps or hoists with proper slope

  • Position wheelchair facing forward

  • Secure with 4-point tie-downs (not on wheels or armrests)

While Driving

  • Drive smoothly and avoid sudden stops

  • Check on passenger comfort

After Transport

  • Park safely and assist with unloading

🔧 Upgrade Your Van
